Music is central to our experience of the world around us.

It is a primary source of the way we experience, understand and interpret the world in which we live.

48 Questions to help people with dementia choose music to help

  • stimulate senses
  • connect with a particular time or place
  • release strong emotions
  • calm, soothe and comfort

People with dementia and memory loss are constantly being told what they CAN’T DO or what they are doing wrong, but when they talk about and hear music, they can often recall, sing and move with confidence. They may not remember the names of children, spouses, and loved ones but often, music of significance results in memories of their lives being restored.

Music can transport us to a particular time or place and release strong emotions. It can calm and soothe us or motivate us and help us to find energy and drive. Music can greatly improve the quality of our lives.

Neurologists have long concluded that music has the ability to transcend dementia and memory loss. The right piece of music can orientate a person when nothing else can, creating a ‘memory bridge’ to past memories, feelings and events.

These cards can be used by individuals, families and groups to develop a variety of musical practices and enhance person centred relationships.

The cards are divided into four colour coded sections that represent universal themes in all our lives

  • Feelings
  • My Family & My Past
  • Romance & Good Times
  • Today & Future

Soundtrack to My Life is written by John Osborne.

John has spent over 35 years as a provider of health and social care in both the public and private sectors. As a talented musician he combined his experience of caring and music to create ‘Soundtrack to My Life’, a music book for people with dementia. In 2012 it won a national care award for innovation. John has developed other ‘Music in Care’ tools including end of life, carers and young people. Following his own experience of fighting a rare form of cancer John developed Music is Medicine for people dealing with medical treatment.

In 2012 he established JoCo Learning & Development to develop and deliver ‘Music in Care’ training for health and social care staff. John is a passionate believer that high quality care is a right and not a privilege.
