Down’s syndrome, or Trisomy 21, is the most common chromosomal condition that occurs naturally in around 1 in every 1,000 births. There are more than 4 million people with Down’s syndrome around the world. Around two babies with Down’s syndrome are born each day here in the UK.

There are many outdated stereotypes that surround Down’s syndrome, this pack is designed to help new parents cut through that to find the early years support they need to get their baby off to a great start in life.

Every parent and family member will feel differently when they hear the diagnosis of Down’s syndrome for the first time. The feelings and experiences they have will all be unique.

These cards are divided into four sections and will encourage conversations about

  • Your Baby - getting to know your baby, forming a secure bond with them and thinking about how to celebrate their arrival.
  • Diagnosis and Health - explore your emotions surrounding their diagnosis and any health issues they might have, whilst strengthening links with your child’s medical team.
  • Support - cut through the myths and get the early years support you need.
  • Life & Relationships -  conversations about the important relationships in your life, including your partner, your children, your family and your friends. This time of adjustment can make you reassess your relationships and the priorities you have in life.

This pack will set you on the right track, whilst sorting fact from myth, so that you can enjoy family life to the full.

They are perfect for new parents, you can talk through one question at a time together, or choose important topics to discuss at an appointment.

Professionals can use the questions to support the families they work with or indeed to question their own thinking about Down’s syndrome. The cards also work well in support group meetings or baby playgroups or when meeting with families who have older children with Down’s syndrome.

Written by Hayley Goleniowska, a mum who is passionate about inclusion and changing the way the world views Down’s syndrome. Her youngest daughter has the condition, but she doesn’t let that define her.

Hayley is also the author of I Love You, Natty. As a writer and speaker, Hayley works with medical professionals to improve the support that parents receive following a diagnosis, whether it be during pregnancy or after birth. She wishes to buy quality time for other parents on the same journey, by removing the fear that often surrounds the condition.
